Rare Breed FRT-15L3 forced reset trigger for AR-15

Designed in Wichita Falls, Texas. Trusted by shooters nationwide.

Rare Breed Triggers: The Original FRT® Forced Reset Trigger

Every forced reset trigger on the market traces back to one design: the Rare Breed FRT-15®. We engineered it, we hold the exclusive license to the U.S. patents behind it, and we fought for your right to own it, all the way to a 2025 settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice.

A Rare Breed FRT® uses your firearm’s own cycling to drive the trigger forward after every shot, so you’re ready for the next one sooner. It’s still one round per pull of the trigger, which keeps it fully semi-automatic.

Every model carries a 3-position selector (Safe, Semi and FRT®), so one firearm handles slow, precise shooting and fast range drills. Each trigger drops in with the pins, selector and tools in the box, no gunsmithing required, and every one is made and assembled in the USA.

Why shooters choose the Rare Breed FRT®

Plenty of companies sell forced reset triggers now. Only one designed the original, holds the patents behind it and took the fight for it to federal court. Here’s what you get when you buy direct from Rare Breed Triggers.

  • Patented FRT® technology

Rare Breed is the exclusive licensee of a comprehensive portfolio of U.S. patents covering forced reset trigger technology. When you buy a Rare Breed FRT, you’re buying the design the category was built on.

  • Made & assembled in the USA

Every trigger is designed in Texas and built with trusted American manufacturing partners. We keep strict oversight from first design through final assembly, so each one meets the same standard.

  • True drop-in installation

No gunsmithing, fitting or machining. Each platform-specific trigger ships with the selector, pins and tools you need, and our installation videos walk you through every step.

  • One round per pull

A Rare Breed FRT is semi-automatic by design. The trigger must reset and be pulled again for every shot, and the 3-position selector lets you switch between standard Semi and FRT® mode anytime.

Find the right Rare Breed FRT for your platform

A forced reset trigger has to be built around the firearm it goes into. That’s why every Rare Breed FRT trigger is engineered for one specific platform rather than adapted to fit many, from the AR-15 that started it all to HK’s roller-delayed MP5 family and B&T’s pistol-caliber carbines.

The flagship. The benchmark. The AR-15 FRT.

The Rare Breed FRT-15®: the AR-15 forced reset trigger that started it all

When the FRT-15® launched, it introduced American shooters to an entirely new kind of AR-15 trigger and created the forced reset category overnight. Today the Rare Breed FRT-15 family is still the benchmark every other AR-15 FRT is measured against.

Every FRT-15® is a drop-in, duty-grade, 3-position forced reset trigger (Safe / Semi / FRT®), 100% manufactured and assembled in the USA. We’ve refined it into five variants so you can match the trigger to the way you shoot.

Rare Breed FRT-15C3 forced reset trigger kit for the AR-15

FRT-15L3®

Single-stage

One clean break with no take-up. The L3 is built for shooters who want speed and simplicity: pull, and it’s gone. It’s the most direct expression of what a forced reset trigger does.

FRT-15C3®

Two-stage

A defined first stage before the break gives you more control on deliberate, precise shots, then the same forced reset speed in FRT® mode. The C3 is for shooters who want both.

Choose your trigger shoe and selector style

All five AR-15 variants share the same price and the same core forced reset function. The difference is the feel of the trigger shoe and the style of selector. Pick the one that matches your build.

MIL models include the trigger, a single-sided Mil-Spec selector and Mil-Spec hammer and trigger pins, for shooters who want the classic Mil-Spec look and feel.

Every kit installs with no gunsmithing. Limit of two triggers per order.

Understand the forced reset trigger

New to forced reset triggers, or deciding whether an FRT® is right for you? Start with the short answers below, then read the full guide on each topic.

  • 01

What is a forced reset trigger?

A forced reset trigger (FRT) is a semi-automatic replacement trigger that uses the firearm’s own cycling to return the trigger forward after every shot. You still pull once for each round, but the faster, positive reset allows quicker, more consistent follow-up shots.

    Read the full guide
  • 02

How does a forced reset trigger work?

You pull and the firearm fires one round. As the action cycles, the FRT uses that motion to push the trigger forward into reset instead of waiting for your finger. Pull again to fire the next round. No round fires until the trigger has fully reset and been pulled again.

    Advantages & disadvantages of FRTs

An FRT delivers faster, more consistent follow-up shots and two triggers in one, with a drop-in install. It also costs more, uses more ammo, may need firearm tuning, and is restricted in some states. Here’s an honest look at both sides before you buy.

Answers

Rare Breed FRT: frequently asked questions

What is a Rare Breed FRT®?
A Rare Breed FRT® is a forced reset trigger designed by Rare Breed Triggers, the company that pioneered the category with the FRT-15®. It uses the firearm’s cycling to reset the trigger after each shot for faster follow-up shots, while still firing one round per pull.
Are FRT triggers legal?
Under the 2025 settlement between Rare Breed Triggers and the U.S. Department of Justice, forced reset triggers that fire one round per trigger function are not machine guns under federal law. Some states restrict them. We don’t ship to restricted states, and buyers are responsible for following their local laws. See our legal status page for details. This is general information, not legal advice.
Is a forced reset trigger a machine gun?
No. A forced reset trigger fires one round for each pull of the trigger. The trigger must reset and be pulled again for every shot, which keeps it semi-automatic.
Which Rare Breed FRT fits my AR-15?
The FRT-15L3® (single-stage) and FRT-15C3® (two-stage) fit standard mil-spec AR-15 lower receivers. Choose a curved, flat or Mil-Spec variant based on your preferred trigger shoe and selector style.
What’s the difference between single-stage and two-stage FRTs?
A single-stage FRT has one clean break with no take-up. A two-stage FRT has a light first stage before the break, which some shooters prefer for precision. Both operate the same way in FRT® mode.
Do you make an FRT for the Ruger® 10/22®?
Yes. The FRT-22® is a complete 3-position forced reset trigger for the Ruger® 10/22® with a push-button cross-bolt safety selector.
Is installation difficult?
Every Rare Breed FRT is a drop-in design. Each includes the selector, pins and tools you need, and no gunsmithing is required. Step-by-step installation guides are available for every model.
Why are there purchase limits?
Demand for Rare Breed triggers is high. To keep access fair, orders are limited to two triggers, and the FRT-22® and FRT-RD3™ are limited to one per customer every 24 hours.
